Compression ratio in the new 7z format is 30-50% better than ratio in ZIP format. Also 7-Zip compresses to ZIP 2-10% better than PKZip and WinZip. 7-Zip has additional powerful command line version and FAR Manager support.

New in this version: fixed bug that caused v.4.31 to not work under Windows 95. 7-Zip has 7-Zip File Manager for files and folders manipulation. 7-Zip supports the following archive formats: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, TAR, BZIP2; and only for browsing and decompression the formats RAR, CAB, ARJ, Z, CPIO, LZH, RPM, DEB. 7-Zip can use one of the following ZIP compression methods: 0 - Store, 8 - Deflate, 9 - Deflate64, 12 - Bzip2. It also has a special algorithm to compress better into zip archives. 7-Zip can use one of the following 7z compression methods: lzma, ppmd and bzip2; 7z is the new archive format, providing high compression ratio and more performances than ZIP. 7-Zip provides superior decompression speed for RAR archives. It has Windows Explorer shell extension. 7-Zip is freeware.
