While forcing developers and users to conform to microsoft''s ideas of "how things should work", the .net framework is a remarkable achievement allowing the creation and usage of very powerful application with an ease of use never found before on the Windows environment. It is a MUST HAVE nowadays, almost like a system driver, but all in all, like DirectX, it''s one of the good things to come out of the redmond conglomorate

Only install this if you are using software that needs it -- that is Visual Studio 2005 and anything compiled with Visual Studio 2005, as well as anything compiled with #Develop in the 2.0 profile (and other products built against 2.0).
Ordinarily, applications bind to the version of .NET that they are compiled with, and so installing 2.0 will have a minimum impact on your system. However, you should keep 1.0 and 1.1 installed to ensure that your existing applications continue to work.
Again, you do not want to uninstall 1.1 or 1.0 -- leave them alone.
Many new programs will require this to be installed, as VS 2005 goes live and the developers who have been working with the beta for 2 years now start releasing code.

this is for .net framework, you run a program created with .net, you need this .. pity its so big and alot of people will be deterred from using programs written in .net simply due people dont (and shouldnt) have to download huge files.
FYI this has absolutley nothing to do with internet explorer
